How do you apply for a room at Hellenic Home?
When you want to apply for a room at Hellenic Home’s new long-term care facility in Scarborough you need to contact
the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) in your community. You can find out more by visiting the
Ontario Association of Community Care Access Centres at www.oaccac.on.ca

and list Hellenic Home as your first choice.
How are you notified if a room is available for you at Hellenic Home?
When a room is available you will be contacted by a Care Coordinator/Case Worker. You will be given 24 hours to accept it and you may move in the following day.
What is the cost of accommodation at Hellenic Home?
The accommodation rates at long-term care facilities are set by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and are standard across Ontario. The rates are adjusted annually. As of July 2003, a Basic Room (a room with one bed and a shared bathroom) costs $1480.99 and a Preferred Room (single room with fully private ensuite) costs $2028.49 per month.
What additional services do residents receive in a Preferred Room at Hellenic Home?
At Hellenic Home, a Preferred Room is a fully private bedroom with a fully private ensuite bedroom. It features upgraded d?cor, including wallpaper and wood trim in bedroom and ensuite, as well as upgraded furniture in the bedroom. Residents of a Preferred Room will enjoy an annual “Come Home Service Package” featuring
- private family dining - 3 course meal, 3 times a year for up to 6 family members
- porter service to external appointments - 4 times a year
- spa services - 4 manicures, pedicures or massages
- podiatry services - 4 foot and nail care treatments
- hair dressing - 4 cuts with wash and blow dry
- Greek newspaper delivery
- catering discount
- in-room cable TV for OTN
- in-room closed circuit TV for chapel services
Do residents need their own family physician?
No, they don’t. Hellenic Home has attending physicians who provide primary medical care and 24 hour emergency coverage. They visit residents weekly and provide an annual physical. Consultations can also be arranged for external specialists upon the physician’s referral.
Is there accommodation for families who need to stay overnight?
Yes, we have a hospitality suite for two that you can book.
How can family members help in the care of the resident?
You can become involved in any of the following ways:
- family council
- meetings with nursing staff
- help at mealtimes
- visit regularly
- take resident on outings
What support services are provided to Hellenic Home residents?
- foot care
- dental care
- rehabilitation/restorative care programs
- hair salon
- optometry
- dietician
How long can Long-Term Care residents leave for vacation?
Vacation leave is 21 days as allotted by the Ministry. Weekend leaves are unlimited and by combining vacation and weekend leave it is possible to be away for a 31 day period.
How long do we hold a resident's bed when they are admitted to Acute Care in a hospital?
The bed is held for 21 days and if the resident wishes the bed to be held longer the “bed holding fee” as set by the Ministry is applied.
Does Hellenic Home accept smokers in any of their accommodations?
No. Hellenic Home is a non-smoking facility.
What is the ratio between Nursing Staff to Residents?
Care is provided by an inter-disciplinary team to meet the needs of our residents. Staffing levels are determined according to the care requirements on the units.
Does Hellenic Home have Greek speaking staff?
Yes, at least one person on every shift speaks Greek.
How often does the resident get a bath?
The resident has a partial sponge bath daily and once a week has a shower/bath and hair shampooed.
Do you serve Greek food?
Yes, the menu includes many traditional Greek dishes.
How often are religious services?
Services are held every Sunday in the chapel, as well as celebrations for saints days. Closed circuit TV is available for residents who can’t attend chapel.
Does Hellenic Home have specific visiting hours?
Visiting hours are open, but we ask that you respect rest and bedtimes for the residents. We can also accommodate families who want to stay overnight in our hospitality suite.
